Essential Oil Storage
With proper essential oil storage, your oils can last for a very long time. Some aspects of proper storage are necessary, whereas other aspects are a personal choice. The Type of Essential Oil Storage Container The ancient Egyptians and the people at the time of Christ stored their essential oils in alabaster jars. When the tomb of King Tut was opened during the early 20th century, the explorers discovered many alabaster jars that had been filled with essential oils. The tomb robbers had taken the oils, but had left the gold! Even after all those centuries, there was still an aroma from what little of the essential oils remained. Today, most people store essential oils in amber glass jars. Why amber? Because a colored glass container helps keep out light and thus helps maintain the effectiveness of the oil. You do not want to store your essential oils in a clear glass container, unless you expect to use the contents within a very short period of time. Storing the oils in direct sunlight is not recommended. The best storage container for home users is glass, not plastic. If you are reading this website, you probably already know that plastic contains compounds which can leach out into the contents of the container. The Temperature for Storage Ideally, your oils should have a storage temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold. If the temperature is comfortable for you or a little child, it is probably comfortable for your oils. Why does the temperature make a difference? Because storage at too hot or too cold a temperature can destroy many of the therapeutic qualities of the oils. This is similar to the ingredients for vitamin C being stored in warehouses whose temperatures reach 115-120 degrees during the summer. Now you know the two primary things to remember for the proper storage of essential oils – store them in amber glass bottles and at a comfortable body temperature. Storage Styled for Your Preferences Some people prefer to have labels on the top of the caps of their essential oil bottles. Young Living makes customized ones, item 3939 at EssentialOilsProducts.com. These circular labels fit perfectly on the tops of Young Living’s 5 ml and 15 ml bottles. The singles are in silver and the blends are in gold foil.
For eyes that are over 40 years of age, some people prefer larger print. Solutions include using a magic marker or label maker. Storage containers for your essential oils include ones available for purchase and ones that you can make yourself. Purchased ones can come as wooden display racks or as padded containers.
