Rose Essential Oil - One of Life's Luxuries!
The aroma of a rose can be sublime - whether it's a single rose, a bouquet, a single rose bush or a rose garden. Just thinking about it can transport you back in time to smelling that rose! Even before I knew about essential oils, I enjoyed getting double duty from a wonderfully scented rose. Perhaps you've also experienced the luxury of taking off the rose petals one by one and dropping them into the bath water. What You Might Like to Know Since learning about essential oils, I've read many claims about what rose oil can do and how people like you and me are using this special oil. Let's start with this, and touch on quality and adulteration later.
How People Are Using Rose Essential Oil This is a small sampling, just to give you some ideas. • for luxury and pampering • to feel surrounded by beauty • as a perfume • in a neclace • mixed with water for an underarm deodorant that can be spritzed on • for more restful sleep • before prayers • during pregnancy and childbirth • anointing a baby girl's head immediately after delivery • grandmother anointing baby girl's head when rocking her • anointing family members before the funeral of a loved one • after the funerals, when waves of grief hit • lift out of sadness • anxiety • with PanAway, wintergreen and nutmeg to eliminate knee pain. I've read of some people applying the rose oil last, while others apply rose ointment last • adding a drop to honey
Scientific Information for the Lay Person Rose oil can contain over 300 compounds, depending on the variety. The information that I'm sharing here relates to Rosa damascena because it is the variety that has been studied most for its therapeutic benefits. The Essential Oils Desk Reference states that rose oil contains compounds with anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, relaxing, and scar reduction properties. L'aromathérapie exactement, the main French reference I use, adds the following: • general tonic • powerful neurotonic • aphrodisiac • tonic astringent • anti-hemmoraging • anti-infectious • helps with scarring
In medicine today, the EDR states that rose oil is used for anxiety, hypertension, skin conditions such as scarring and wrinkles, as well as for viral infections such as herpes simplex. What the EDR does not state is that the doctors who are using essential oils in their practice are mainly outside of the United States. L'aromathérapie exactement extends the list of medical uses to include cronchitis, astham, tuberculosis, sexual weakness in males and females, frigidity, impotence, dermatosis, wounds, ulcers, sprains, thrush, and gingivitis. Psychological aspects Rose oil is noted for its ability to help bring balance, harmony, and a sense of well-being. According to the EDR, it is stimulating and elevating to the mind and can help a person overcome insecurities. Quality If it takes a room full of rose petals piled from floor to ceiling to yield one cup of rose essential oil, how can rose oil sell for $10 to $20 a bottle? Here are some ideas. 1. It may not be Rosa demascema. 2. It may not have been grown organically. 3. The rose petals may not have picked early in the morning. 4. The rose petals may not have been distilled as soon as possible after being picked. 5. The petals may have been distilled too quickly or at too high a temperature to preserve the therapeutic properties. 6. Synthetic chemicals or even other less expensive essential oils may have been added.
The Bottom Line With rose essential oil, price is an excellent indicator of quality. Expect to pay between $1.75 and $3.00 per drop for a top quality Rosa damascena essential oil. Why Is Quality Important? If you put it on your skin, it's going to get into the bloodstream and go to virtually every cell in your body. If you inhale it, it's going to to go your brain in seconds. Do you want natural or synthetic compounds going to your brain? You have a choice here! Where to Purchase The rose essential oil that I use and that I buy as a gift for my mother may be found at
